Eureka is the county seat of Humboldt County and the largest city between San Francisco and Portland, serving as the hub of what is known as the Redwood Coast. The region's character was shaped by 150 years of timber harvesting, coastal fishing, and the relationship between working people and the ancient forests and waters surrounding them. This is a landscape where human livelihood and natural systems have always been interdependent: loggers and mill workers built the Victorian city, fishermen and cannery workers supplied the region, and today tourism, environmental work, and the parks themselves employ thousands of families who chose to stay in the North Coast because of what the land offers.

The city maintains strong connections to its past while building a future around recreation, art, education, and cultural work. Cal Poly Humboldt, museums, galleries, and small independent businesses draw people to stay or return. The Wiyot people have deep historical roots in Humboldt Bay and the region's waterways, and their cultural presence is woven into community events, education, and the ongoing work of understanding and protecting the land. Indigenous heritage, logging history, fishing traditions, and conservation efforts exist as overlapping layers of identity, creating a place where newcomers and multigenerational families alike find community and purpose.

In a region where people are rooted to place and committed to community, households often stay for decades, raising children in the same neighborhoods their parents grew up in. That stability is also vulnerability: if a household depends on one income and that income ends, the family loses not just money but their place in a community they have invested in. A life insurance policy sized to keep a family's home, children's schooling, and community memberships intact is how working people in Eureka and Humboldt County protect what they have built together.
